TikTok DMs have a shape no other platform produces: a great deal of the relationship is conducted by sending things rather than saying them. Two people can trade videos for weeks without a sentence that means anything on its own. That makes the moments where someone actually writes unusually informative — the switch from sharing to speaking is almost always driven by something, and the language people reach for when they finally make it is the part worth reading.
How to export your TikTok conversation
Produces a user_data.json file
- 1Open TikTok, go to your profile, then the menu and Settings and privacy.
- 2Open Account → Download your data.
- 3On the Request data tab, set the file format to JSON. TXT cannot be parsed.
- 4Request the data. TikTok takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
- 5When it is ready, open the Download data tab and save the .zip — the link expires after four days.
- 6Unzip it and upload user_data.json (newer exports name it user_data_tiktok.json).
What you get back
- An attachment read for both peopleGrounded in the ECR-R, the scale used in actual relationship research — not a personality type.
- The cycle you are both inWho pursues, who withdraws, and what sets it off — quoted from your own messages.
- What actually repairs itSpecific things that have worked between you before, and what to try next.
- Evidence for every claimEach conclusion cites the messages it came from, so you can disagree with it.
Your TikTok conversation is never stored and never used to train anything. It is sent once, analyzed, and discarded. Many chat-analysis tools keep your conversations and train on them — we built ChatMend so that we simply never hold them. Read the policy.
TikTok questions
Why does TikTok take so much longer than the other platforms?
TikTok queues these requests rather than generating them on demand, and it is genuinely slow — usually hours, sometimes several days. It emails you when the file is ready, and the download link then expires after four days, so save it promptly.
Should I choose TXT or JSON?
JSON. The TXT option is a human-readable dump with no reliable structure around each message, so who said what cannot be recovered from it with any confidence. JSON keeps the sender and timestamp attached to every line.
My export contains every conversation I have — which one gets analysed?
All of them are loaded, and you pick the two people to analyse. That is on purpose: choosing the biggest thread for you would silently decide which relationship you meant.
Most of our DMs are just shared videos. Is that enough?
Shared videos come through as links, which counts as very little to read. If a thread is almost entirely shares, expect a thin result — the analysis needs sentences. A conversation where you actually talk, even a short one, gives a much better read than a long one made of links.
