How to export your Messenger conversation

Produces a message_1.json file

  1. 1Go to facebook.com → Settings & privacy → Settings.
  2. 2Open Your Facebook information → Download your information.
  3. 3Deselect everything, then select only Messages.
  4. 4Set the format to JSON and request the download.
  5. 5Unzip the file Meta emails you and open your conversation's folder.
  6. 6Upload message_1.json.

Messenger questions

My conversation is split across several files — which do I upload?

Meta splits long threads into message_1.json, message_2.json and so on. Upload the one covering the period you care about; each is analysed on its own.

How long does the export take?

Usually a few hours. Selecting only Messages rather than your whole account makes it noticeably faster.

Are reactions and calls included?

Those events appear in the file but are not analysed — only the text of what was actually said.

Is my Messenger history stored on your servers?

No. It is read in your browser, sent once for analysis, and never retained or used to train anything.
