Instagram DM Analyzer

Upload your Instagram data export and see what the conversation says about how you and the other person connect.

Instagram is where a lot of modern dating actually starts, and it has a texture the older platforms do not: stories seen but not replied to, messages left on read, the visible evidence that someone was online. That creates a very specific anxiety loop, and it shows up clearly in the language people use when they finally address it.

How to export your Instagram conversation

Produces a message_1.json file

  1. 1Go to Settings → Accounts Centre → Your information and permissions.
  2. 2Choose Download your information, then Download or transfer information.
  3. 3Select only Messages — everything else just delays the export.
  4. 4Set the format to JSON. HTML exports cannot be read.
  5. 5When the email arrives, unzip it and open your conversation's folder.
  6. 6Upload the message_1.json file from inside it.

What you get back

  • An attachment read for both peopleGrounded in the ECR-R, the scale used in actual relationship research — not a personality type.
  • The cycle you are both inWho pursues, who withdraws, and what sets it off — quoted from your own messages.
  • What actually repairs itSpecific things that have worked between you before, and what to try next.
  • Evidence for every claimEach conclusion cites the messages it came from, so you can disagree with it.

Your Instagram conversation is never stored and never used to train anything. It is sent once, analyzed, and discarded. Many chat-analysis tools keep your conversations and train on them — we built ChatMend so that we simply never hold them. Read the policy.

Instagram questions

How long does Instagram take to send the export?

Usually a few hours, occasionally up to a day. Instagram emails you when it is ready — there is no way to speed it up.

Why must I choose JSON and not HTML?

HTML is a web page built for reading, not structured data. JSON contains the messages in a form that can actually be parsed.

My export has strange characters like ’ — is that a problem?

No. Meta's exports mangle apostrophes and accents in a well-known way, and we repair that automatically when reading the file.

Will this include disappearing or vanish-mode messages?

No. Anything Instagram has deleted is genuinely gone and will not appear in the export.
